However, polystyrene foam is not chemically inert. For example, while water, salt solutions and weak aqueous solutions are non-aggressive to polystyrene, certain ketones, hydrocarbons, paint, coatings, cleaning solutions, adhesives etc. can cause the foam to soften, shrink, crack or even collapse.

Chemical resistance of EPS should not be simplified to “resistant” or “not resistant”. For the application of the finished foam it is much more relevant to know what is coming into contact with it, for how long, at what temperature and under what pressure. This information is required for packaging, for thermal insulation, for molded industrial parts as well as for other applications where during production, transportation, installation or service chemicals may come into contact with the material.

What Does EPS Chemical Resistance Really Mean?

Why Is Compatibility Not a Simple Pass-or-Fail Property?

Chemical resistance of a part is not solely defined by the material name. Short time exposure with immediate wiping of the liquid off the surface versus long time exposure with possible repeated contact with the liquid at ambient temperatures as well as under temperature, pressure etc. influenced conditions all must be evaluated.

Concentration is another important variable. A dilute aqueous solution is not exposed in the same manner as a concentrated industrial formulation. Polystyrene chemical resistance data are useful for ‘screening’ purposes but it is important to complete a project specific trial where exposure is unusual or critical to product performance/safety.

Can Surface Damage Become a Structural Problem?

Yes. Attack can extend beyond discoloration and surface roughening. Softening, crazing, local collapse, cracking and dimensional change can severely alter the molded article’s ability to carry load or fit around other products.

A small area of softening could become the focal point where a heavy item presses into the packaging insert. In the case of insulation a localized surface effect can affect the thickness, the edge seal or even the bond between separate layers. Thus compatibility with EPS foam has to be tested against the intended function of the foam after exposure and not just against appearance.

Which Common Materials Can Usually Contact EPS?

What About Water and Dilute Aqueous Materials?

Typically, fresh water, salt water and dilute aqueous solutions do not cause as much damage to EPS as strong organic solvents. This is why EPS is so widely used for insulation as well as for packaging of seafood, for cold-chain packaging and for other applications where it may be exposed to high humidity or to come into contact with water from time to time.

Terms like “water-based” don’t fully describe the chemistry of a cleaner, adhesive or coating and while such products may be water-diluted, they can also contain surfactants, co-solvents and other additives. It is best to check the actual formulation and safety data for a product rather than rely on a marketing category.

Which Building Materials Are Usually Easier to Match?

EPS is used in conjunction with a number of materials including cementitious materials, gypsum-based products and other non-solvent building systems. The main thing to be aware of in each of these cases is whether the contacting material contains any ingredients that will attack polystyrene.

Adhesives, coatings, membranes, sealants and surface treatments for building insulation projects have to be checked as a complete system. A product which is suitable for masonry might be unsuitable for exposed EPS insulation, for example, because the carrier system of the product contains aggressive solvents.

HUASHENG Grado estándar E is suitable for general-purpose projects that require consistent molding, good bonding, smooth surface finish and good dimension accuracy. A can labeled “solvent” is not the only thing to watch out for. Even a finished article can contain a hidden quantity of solvent.

Don’t ask the safest EPS cleaner question! It is not “Is this cleaner safe for EPS?”. It is “What is in the cleaner?”. The large volume of gas within the polymer of the foam matrix is dramatically released as the foam’s cellular structure collapses.

The appearance of the expanded foam ‘melting’ is less important than the production lesson that once the expanded structure has gone the original shape and cushioning ability is lost for good. Drying the residue does not recreate the original molded article.

Solvent contact is not just a cosmetic issue for packaging and insulation parts.

Is EPS Oil Resistance Good Enough for Industrial Packaging?

Why Is “Oil” Too Broad a Specification?

Many things are referred to as “oil”, but actually are quite different: machine oil, rust preventatives, cutting oils, lubricants, fuels, transformer oils, vegetable oils, and a host of other maintenance fluids that are mixed together in dirty puddles.

The impact of short contact time to any metal component could be minimal for some products whilst others may contain hydrocarbons, solvents or special additives which can increase the risk dramatically. In addition, the length of time that a component is in contact with the packing foam is important. A metal component covered in a thin layer of protective oil during the short period of packing a component will not suffer the same effects as a stored component that has been left under pressure against the foam for months.

For industrial packaging applications list the specific oil or fluid in the RFQ. Reviewing the Supplier’s SDS is far more valuable than asking for ‘oil-resistant EPS’.

Why Do Load and Chemical Exposure Need to Be Tested Together?

A packaging insert may pass a visual inspection, but fail in use as the chemical exposure and pressure may occur at the same location. The density, bead fusion, molded shape, thickness and surface finish of your sample should mimic that of your final part. A molded support part needs to be able to hold the real part. An insulation part needs to hold dimension and surface integrity.

At this point, EPS foam compatibility becomes a production issue rather than a matter to be agreed from a material list.

How HUASHENG buyers should specify chemical exposure

Why Should the Application Come Before the Grade?

HUASHENG offers common type, flame retardant type, graphite type, environmental protection type, carbon black type and customized types of EPS materials.
